Posted on 4/10/2020 by Everwell Dentistry
Do you tend to chew on ice when you get am ice drink at the store? If so, you really should stop the habit altogether. If you want to protect your teeth, you do not want to make chewing on ice a habit. Ice is a hard substance, one that can crack or fracture a tooth or cause permanent injury. The following information elaborates on why this practice is a dental taboo.
What Causes People to Chew on Ice?
If you like to chew on ice, it may be because you have an iron deficiency or have anemia. This condition causes sufferers to crave ice, although medical doctors are not sure why. You may have anemia if you experience fatigue and often feel light-headed. Anemia can also cause chest pain, a swollen tongue, and respiratory difficulties. Emotional issues can also lead to ice chewing. People with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) or feel anxious tend to chew on ice. If you have a case of mild dehydration, you may turn to ice to quench your thirst. You may also chew on ice to cool off on a hot and humid day.
What to Do about an Ice-chewing Habit
It helps to investigate why you crave ice and why you chew it. By knowing the origin, you can take steps to remedy the problem. Being cognizant of the issue can also help you formulate a plan of better dental care. Make sure you brush your teeth at least twice a day (morning and before bed at night) and floss at least daily too. The more time you devote to teeth and gum care, the less likely you will resort to activities that can damage the teeth.
