Periodontal Health Ann ArborEverwell Dentistry is here to help, and to educate. Most people have never heard the word “Periodontal” let alone know about “periodontal disease.” We bet, though, that you have heard of gums. They are one in the same, and periodontal health is just as important as the health of your teeth! Gum health and the health of many other systems in your body, particularly your cardiovascular system, work off of each other. Our staff will show you how best to take care of your gums to give them a long life. Risks of Periodontal (Gum) DiseaseBoth tooth and gum disease are triggered by bad bacteria collecting in your mouth and all the little niches and crevices. When you don't brush your teeth often, the film of food that remains is the perfect ground for them to thrive on. These same bacteria that can cause decay in your teeth can cause infection in your gums. Your gums then become inflamed, bone loss can happen, and your gums become weak as they separate from your teeth. They can become red and tender, and if let continue long enough, gum disease can eventually lead to tooth loss. How to Prevent DiseaseMost importantly, develop a strict routine comprised of brushing at least twice a day, and flossing at least once. One of these brushings should be right before you sleep, the other should be after you eat at another point in the day. Most often, people brush after breakfast. Another important routine is visiting our office at least once every six months or so. Our hygienist does a great job of keeping your mouth super clean! We also get rid of all that leftover plaque that the bacteria feed on, as well as keep that same plaque from hardening and pushing your gums away from your teeth. What If I Get it Anyway? If you get gum disease despite your best efforts, there are steps that we can take to salvage your oral health. If you notice your gums are bleeding regularly or are painful to the touch, come right in to see us at Everwell Dentistry. Our office will do much the same thing that your daily routine aspires to do, but we will do it on a larger and more in-depth scale. We can scrape off tartar and will remove all extra plaque as well as we can. If the disease has progressed beyond our reach, we may have to talk to a periodontist, who specializes in gums and similar structures.Periodontal Disease Treatment & MaintenanceIf you end up with periodontal disease, we can help restore your smile, gums and oral health with periodontal treatment. In some cases when the periodontal disease has progressed, we may need to put you on a periodontal disease maintenance plan to fully treat you gum disease. Everwell Dentistry is here to take care of you. Whether you want to know more about keeping your gums healthy or need a little help getting back on track, do not hesitate to give us a call.
