Times Where an Inlay is the Right Answer

Times Where an Inlay is the Right AnswerIf we have told you that you have tooth decay or damage, and a filling is not the solution, you might want to consider an inlay.

Inlays share some characteristics with fillings, and yet are different in others. Here is more information about these dental reconstructions.

What is an Inlay?

An inlay is a dental reconstruction that is inserted inside of a tooth, which has suffered from decay or damage. In this sense, it is quite similar to a filling. However, fillings tend to be more suitable for smaller repairs, and are constructed slightly differently.

When we create a filling, we simply drill away the affected tooth material and replace it with a material that quickly hardens to fill the space in the tooth. On the other hand, when we install an inlay, we create the reconstruction from a single piece of material that is fashioned to fit the contours of the area that needs to be filled. We then cement the inlay into your tooth using a specialized dental cement.

When is an Inlay the Right Answer?

Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule, but generally speaking an inlay will be appropriate in a situation where the cavity or damage to the tooth is too large to be repaired using a traditional filling. Because it is crafted from a single piece of material, an inlay will tend to be stronger than a filling, especially in situations where the area to be filled is large.

One thing to remember is that, once it is in place, an inlay will usually not contract as much as a filling will. This means that there is a smaller chance of the restoration failing and needing to be replaced down the road. If you have any questions, please contact us! We're here to help!
