3 Tips For A Healthier Smile

3 Tips For A Healthier SmileThe health of your smile starts with you. When you take care of your dental hygiene, it helps improve your oral health and promotes your overall health. Excellent dental hygiene prevents gum disease, needless to say, tooth decay. It also helps keep the teeth strong as you age and prevents bad breath. An unhealthy mouth can increase the risk of developing serious health problems like heart attacks, diabetes, Alzheimer's, and stroke. To maintain a healthy smile, you need to keep up on these three important things.

Brush Two Times A Day and Floss Once

According to the American Dental Association, the average person needs to brush their teeth at least twice a day using a soft-bristled brush. When brushing, do it for two minutes. Make sure you brush properly by tilting the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle. Ensure you reach every side and surface of the tooth, including the gum line, which many people often miss while brushing. Floss in between the teeth once a day to help control dental plaque.

Don't Skip your Regular Dental Visits

Most dentists recommend that you have routine oral exams done every six months. If you have a risk of developing gum disease, you may consider having the dentist visits more frequently, say, after every three months. A dentist examines your teeth, gums, tongue, jawbone, throat, and neck during regular dental visits. The dentist also looks for signs of oral cancer. The visit also involves teeth cleaning and X-rays to see if a cavity is present and whether your jawbone is in good shape. Before performing deep cleaning or “planing and scaling”, a dentist observes the teeth for plaque and calculus or tartar. The presence of plaque, the thin, sticky bio-film, means that the dentist has to remove it before cleaning the mouth. The dentist also checks for gum pockets that harbor bacteria and plaque.

Use A Quality Toothbrush

Dentists recommend using a soft bristle toothbrush. Ensure you replace the toothbrush every three months. You may also consider using a quality electronic toothbrush. The aim is to make sure that the toothbrush is able to stimulate and clean your gums and remove plaque. Visit us at our dental office to find out how you can maintain a healthier smile.

The first step to a healthy beautiful smile is to schedule an appointment.
