The Four Stages of Periodontitis

Posted on 11/8/2021 by Everwell Dentistry
The Four Stages of PeriodontitisPeriodontitis might seem like a simple thing to fix. It is usually possible to avoid periodontitis if we combine a good oral hygiene regimen with bi-yearly check-ups at a dentist. However, there are different stages to periodontitis, and it is important to recognize those stages before the disease goes too far.

How Periodontitis Progresses

Gingivitis is the first and only stage of periodontal disease that is treatable without long-term consequences because it as it has not gotten to the bones yet. Gingivitis is the result of a buildup of plaque around the teeth. There are very few signs to look out for at this point, which makes it hard to catch. Occasional swelling or bad breath is a sign that you might already have gingivitis.

The second stage of periodontal disease is not reversible, like gingivitis. Slight periodontal disease is the second stage of periodontal disease. Once you reach the second stage, periodontitis is at your bones. At this point, the bacteria become more prolific and harder to treat. Brushing and flossing are no longer enough to help you and you will require some sort of medical help. Symptoms of the third stage are about the same, except that the disease progresses deeper into the bone, and can now access your bloodstream. However, at this point, root planing and scaling are still treatments that can help to protect your remaining bones and teeth.

The fourth and final stage of periodontitis is especially bad. The risk of bone loss not only becomes excessive, but it is almost guaranteed. Bone loss is by far not the only symptom, with gum bleeding, pockets of pus, and sensory issues at the forefront. This stage requires extensive surgery to treat the deep pockets of infection. If left untreated, stage four periodontal disease leads to the unwanted spacing between teeth, gaps in the gums, and other serious and life-long issues.
