After brushing, many people spit out the toothpaste and then swish some water around their mouth. This rinse helps dislodge any toothpaste that is stuck on your teeth. However, while you may not want toothpaste left in your mouth, rinsing with water is not the way to get rid of it. Using water actually undoes some of the protection you just gave your teeth. Instead of rinsing with water, you should rinse your mouth with mouthwash instead.
Why Not Water?
The toothpaste you use to brush your teeth likely contains fluoride. This is a special compound that actually helps your teeth rebuild enamel, which makes up the outer layer of your teeth. In fact, this process can actually eliminate cavities that are in their very early stages. However, fluoride does not take effect immediately. It actually needs about 30 minutes before it can fully sink into the teeth and begin working.
This means if you rinse your mouth with water right after you brush, you are rinsing off all of the fluoride you just applied to your teeth. This also occurs if you eat or drink anything within 30 minutes of brushing.
How Mouthwash Avoids Removing Fluoride
Using mouthwash, on the other hand, will not remove the fluoride on your teeth as long as you are using a mouthwash that contains more fluoride. If it does, the mouthwash will help you rinse out any leftover toothpaste, as well as ensure that all of your teeth benefit from fluoride. Do make certain that the mouthwash you are using contains fluoride. If it does not, it will also rinse the fluoride from your toothpaste off your teeth.
