Which Parts of Your Mouth Require Extra Cleaning Attention?

Posted on 8/10/2020 by Everwell Dentistry
Which Parts of Your Mouth Require Extra Cleaning Attention?Your toothbrush normally only reaches about 50% of your tooth's surface. But here's a grimmer statistic: Studies show that hard-to-reach areas of the mouth are the breeding ground for over 80% of cavities. Evidence that people do ignore these hard-to-reach areas to their detriment comes from a Center for Disease Control report that shows that over 80% of people develop at least one cavity before they turn 35.

But that shouldn't be the case for you if you read this post and implement our recommendations on time. In this guide, we shed light on all the hard-to-reach areas of the mouth and how to clean them easily and effectively.

Interdental Spaces

This refers to the space in between the teeth. An interdental cleaning is a special term coined for the cleaning of these areas because it involves a little extra effort and the use of tools like flosses and interdental brushes to take care these areas. Interdental cleaning techniques and tools are specially designed to help prevent problems like interproximal caries and periodontal disease.

The Back of the Tongue

The bristles of your toothbrush might be hard enough to wipe out food deposits and plaque from the surface of your teeth, but too soft to clean your tongue properly. Besides, it's usually more difficult to reach the back of your tongue with your toothbrush. But a tongue scraper can help you clear out various types of bacteria and food debris across all visible areas of your tongue. Simply scrape your tongue once every day with a tongue scraper, starting from the back of the tongue to the sides and the middle portion. Rinse your mouth and the scraper thoroughly afterward.

Distal Surfaces

This refers to back of your teeth that can be hard to reach with regular toothbrush. You're better off with small-headed toothbrushes or electric toothbrushes when it comes to cleaning your distal surfaces. Flossing and using single-tufted brushes are all also effective options for cleaning dental surfaces.
