How Diabetes Changes Your Oral Health Routine

Posted on 11/20/2019 by Everwell Dentistry
How Diabetes Changes Your Oral Health RoutineAround 100 million people in the United States alone suffer from diabetes, however, some people are not aware of how diabetes affects their oral health.

Diabetes sufferers know the complications to their bodily health, but many do not know the complications diabetes can bring on to oral health if the proper steps for care are not taken.

Many diabetics suffer from dry mouth, which can allow bacteria to more easily grown inside the mouth. These bacteria have the possibility of infecting gums leading to gingivitis, and if it progresses enough, periodontitis. Because of dry mouth diabetics need to make sure to take extra care of their mouth.

How to Prevent Gum Disease While Diabetic

When it comes to any oral care routine, it is always imperative to perform daily flossing and brushing as well as visit our office once every six months. Flossing and brushing will help rid your mouth of gum disease causing bacteria, but occasionally some bacteria are able to stay around after brushing. Over time these bacteria will become plaque. Plaque must be removed during a dental cleaning as it is too hard to remove with a normal brush. This is why it is important to make regular visits to our clinic.

If you have diabetes, it is also important to think about the role your oral hygiene can play in your bodily health. Sufferers of diabetes struggle to control their blood sugar and poor hygiene can make that battle more difficult. When the gums become infected due to poor hygiene, it allows blood sugar rise, making it more difficult to control blood sugar levels.

This is because gum infections will act like any other infection in the body. Diabetics know the importance of maintaining good blood sugar levels as it can cause serious side effects like heart palpitations and fainting, so keeping good oral hygiene is important to keeping not only your mouth healthy but also your body safe. Please give us a call if you would like any more information on steps you can take to promote good oral health.
The first step to a healthy beautiful smile is to schedule an appointment.
