Do I Need a Nighttime Mouth Guard to Protect My Teeth?

Do I Need a Nighttime Mouth Guard to Protect My Teeth?Have you ever started your morning routine with a great night's sleep only to discover a throbbing ache in your jaw?

Maybe your significant other has mentioned that you're making screeching and grinding noises periodically when you sleep.

There may be others who awaken with a sore jaw joint near the ears. These are signs of oral disorders that can damage teeth and cause pain regularly.  Using a nighttime mouthguard can help to avoid damaging teeth, reduce pain, and allow for a better night's rest.

Common Disorders Affecting Your Mouth at Night

The most common sleeping issue that affects your teeth is Bruxism. It is essentially the regular grinding of your teeth; It affects 10 to 15 percent of adults. The most common trigger for episodes is stress. It can cause broken, cracked, or chipped teeth. Less common is Temporomandibular joint dysfunction or TMJ disorder. This is noted as pain that occurs in the joints of the jawbone.

The cause is difficult to diagnose, but repeated clenching of the jaw during the night can trigger pain and swelling. Talk with your dentist about any problems with your teeth that may have occurred. If you experience these problems, the next step is a comfortable mouthguard.

Types of Mouthguards

You have three different choices to consider when needing a mouthguard. You have stock mouthguards; they are widely available and affordable. Most sporting good and drug stores have them handy. They are made in one-size-fits all approaches, meaning they can be uncomfortable for extended use.

Boil-and-bite guards are found in most drugstores and are relatively inexpensive. You boil them to soften and then bite into them, customizing them for your teeth. Their thickness can be uncomfortable to some. Our office can design the most comfortable mouthguard by customizing it to your teeth. Many dental plans cover some or all of the costs.

If you grind your teeth, snore or have sleep apnea, our office can design a custom-made mouth piece that will assist with nighttime ailments. Customizing a mouthguard will protect your teeth from many situations, for example, sporting events, teeth grinding, and even protect teeth containing braces. Call today, we can fix any signs of damage and start building a mouthguard specifically for you.
The first step to a healthy beautiful smile is to schedule an appointment.
