Can Chewing Gum Help Keep Your Gums Clean?

Posted on 9/25/2019 by Everwell Dentistry
Can Chewing Gum Help Keep Your Gums Clean?Everyone knows that chewing on a stick of gum can help keep your breath fresh during the day. In addition to the flavoring from gum, the act of chewing helps keep saliva circulating around the mouth, keeping the breath fresher.

However, did you know that there are other benefits to chewing gum? In fact, chewing gum can actually improve your oral health. Read on for more information.

Chewing Gum and Your Gum Tissue

As you probably know, keeping your gums healthy is just as important as keeping your teeth strong and clean. A great way to clean your gums is to pop in some sugar free gum after a meal. The up and down motion from the chewing helps stimulate the production and circulation of saliva.

The increased saliva flow, in turn, will help to rinse away excess pockets of bacteria that may be grouped in the nooks and crannies of the gum tissue. By decreasing the bacterial levels in your mouth, you are helping to keep your gum tissue clean.

What Kind of Gum Should You Use?

Of course, this news does not mean that you should just chew the first type of gum that you find. Many kinds of gum have more sugar than anything else, meaning that chewing them can provide fuel for those bacteria that you are trying to get rid of. (This is why sugar contributes to cavities—the bacteria in your mouth thrive on sugar, and they produce an acidic compound that wears away your enamel.)

Because of this, it is best to opt for a sugar free gum. There are many types available, and most of them will do a good job of retaining their flavor, while sparing your teeth the assault from elevated sugar levels.
