Brushing Your Teeth Too Long Can Leave Your Teeth in Pain

Brushing Your Teeth Too Long Can Leave Your Teeth in PainBrushing your teeth is an important part of maintaining good oral health. It is important because it removes the bacteria that sit on your teeth and can cause plaque to build up. These bacteria also lead to tooth decay. The American Dental Association recommends that you brush your teeth twice a day.

You should brush first thing in the morning, or after breakfast if you wish, and again before you go to sleep at night. When you brush, you should do so for a minimum of two minutes and no more than three minutes. You should use a soft-bristled brush, as research has found that medium and hard-bristled brushes can damage the enamel.

What Happens if You Brush Too Much?

When you brush your teeth, you are removing bacteria and plaque from your teeth. These materials sit on the enamel of your teeth, which is the protective covering for the roots and inner structures of your teeth. Enamel is one of the strongest materials in your body, but it is certainly not immune to damage. It can be damaged a number of ways. One of which is overbrushing.

Overbrushing can wear down the enamel of your teeth. When the enamel gets worn down, the bacteria sitting on your teeth can get past the protective coating and make your teeth more prone to getting cavities. In addition, it can make your teeth sensitive to hot and cold. Though you can use special toothpaste to help combat this sensitivity, it is not something you want to have. It is a sign that your teeth are not as well-protected as they should be.

To help avoid overbrushing, here are a few tips. Brush only twice a day and for no more than 2 minutes at a brushing. Plaque is very soft and can be removed with a rag. You brush because a rag can't go where a brush can. The lesson here is do not apply too much pressure when you brush. It is unnecessary and can damage your teeth. Always brush your teeth with the brush held at a 45-degree angle and always use soft-bristled brushes. If you want to find out more, give our office a call.
