Most of us know the benefits that mouthwash has on our mouth. It freshens the breath and can keep bacteria levels under control, preventing cavities and a host of other oral health problems. What you might be on the fence about is whether you should use a mouthwash variety that contains alcohol. While that is a personal decision, it is important to know how alcohol in mouthwash might affect your gums. The Concerns of Alcohol-Based Mouth WashMouthwash is an important aspect of good oral care, but not all mouthwashes are the same. Those that are high in alcohol could negatively impact your oral health. First, some mouthwash varieties have alcohol concentrations that exceed that of red or white wine, and they can irritate the soft tissues of the mouth. Redness and inflammation may occur, making your gums more susceptible to bacteria and infection.Additionally, Australian researchers recently found that excessive use of alcohol-containing mouthwash can significantly increase a person's risk of developing oral cancer. While the research is mixed, other studies have found at least a slight increased risk of oral cancer in people who use alcohol-based mouthwash. Other findings indicate that this type of mouthwash can eventually destroy fillings and cause oral ulcers. Try Alcohol-Free MouthwashIf you are concerned about the effects of alcohol-based mouthwash, that doesn't mean that you shouldn't use mouthwash. There are many wonderful alcohol-free varieties that can give you all the great benefits of mouthwash without the risk. Search your local pharmacy for options that state they don't contain alcohol, such as Listerine Zero. Alcohol-free mouthwashes use fluoride and essential oils to protect your teeth, kill bacteria, and maintain healthy gums without the alcohol.Do you have more questions about how alcohol-free mouthwash can benefit your mouth?
