According to the CDC, fluoride is incredibly safe and beneficial. There is no scientific evidence connecting fluoride to adverse health consequences. In fact, evidence confidently supports that fluoride is effective at preventing dental cavities. While fluoride treatments are safe, there is one situation that should be of concern – ingesting too much fluoride. Avoid Too Much FluorideWhen it comes to avoiding fluoride treatments, one of the biggest concerns is having treatments too close together or consuming too much fluoride. Depending on your oral health, you might be advised to have treatments every 3, 6, or 12 months, but doing so in between sessions can actually leave you with too much fluoride in your system. Excess fluoride, or fluorosis, can result in some side effects:
In very rare cases, acute fluoride toxicity may occur, with side effects including diarrhea, nausea, and excessive sweating. However, this is most commonly noted with overdoses on fluoride supplement pills. Who Benefits from Fluoride Treatments?Fluoride is found in drinking water and most toothpaste brands, but there are times when dental office fluoride treatments might be recommended. Specifically, if you suffer from dry mouth conditions that result in a lack of saliva, you might want to get a fluoride treatment. Also, if you have a history of frequent cavities or are at a heightened risk for gum disease, fluoride treatments might be beneficial. The presence of crowns, bridges, or braces might also heighten your risk for decay and warrant fluoride treatments. Do you have questions about fluoride treatments or wonder if they might be a good option for you? If so, give our office a call to set up your next appointment. We are happy to help. |
