With proper oral care and regular checkups, your fillings should last for many years. However, depending on the types of foods you eat and other factors, sometimes they can come loose and cause you pain. Fillings are the materials used to fix a cavity. The ones made of metal are more durable and should last many, many years, depending on how well you take care of them. The white fillings, which match the color of your teeth are less durable and wear sooner. Why Loose Fillings HurtOne of the most apparent reasons for pain with a loose filling is that a cavity becomes exposed. When this happens, the inner part of the tooth or the root where the nerve centers are located could make the tooth extremely sensitive.Another reason for pain with a loose filling is that it can be rubbing against another tooth, the tongue or gums. This can cause pain and damage to adjacent areas. How to Tell if a Filling is LooseIt may not be apparent at first, but one of the most obvious signs a filling is loose is that you can feel a hole in the crown of your tooth. The surface of that piece will be rough, and you may feel pointy edges. If the filling falls out altogether, you should come in as quickly as possible, so we can replace it before more decay develops.Anytime there is pain in your mouth, for whatever reason, you should call us. Ignoring problems with your oral health will only make matters worse and cost you more money in extensive treatment to repair a problem that could be avoided. If you have any pain that you suspect comes from a filling that has come loose, and you are in pain, please come in. Filling a tooth doesn't take long at all and you will feel much better. |
