What You Should Know About Extraction Prior to Dentures

What You Should Know About Extraction Prior to DenturesIf you have made the decision to have a few remaining teeth extracted so you can get a set of dentures, there are some things to be aware of before you undergo the procedure.

By being informed, you can help reduce the chances of surprises, making the process much easier for you.

You May Not Be Able to Get Dentures Right Away

Good dentures are custom-fashioned to fit the unique contours of your mouth and gum tissue. This means that we will have them specially created for you.

The down side of this is that we may not be able to take accurate measurements of your gum tissue until after the extraction sites have healed up. Obviously, when you have teeth there, we cannot know what the exact contours of your gum tissue will be. And, after the extraction, there will of course be some swelling in the extraction area.

Immediate Dentures

There is a solution to this issue. We can give you immediate dentures, which are dentures that are temporary in nature, but will allow you to at least have some ability to chew. Because it will be impossible to precisely measure your gum tissue, a set of immediate dentures will probably not be the perfect fit, but keep in mind that this is only a temporary situation.

Your gums will be tender for several days. During this time, you will have to eat foods that require little or no chewing, such as soups, yogurt, and other similar foods. While your immediate dentures can help with chewing to some extent, you obviously will want to avoid any foods that require extensive chewing.

Remember that this is all temporary. Soon enough your gums will heal, your custom dentures will be ready, and you'll be able to resume your normal dietary routines.
The first step to a healthy beautiful smile is to schedule an appointment.
