Why Teeth Become Yellow As We Get Older

Why Teeth Become Yellow As We Get OlderMany people don't realize that your mouth ages just like the rest of our bodies. This includes yellowing of the teeth. Fortunately, there are steps that you can take to prevent your teeth from yellowing as you get older.

Why Do Teeth Turn Yellow with Age?

The biggest culprit for yellowed teeth with age is the enamel. The enamel thins out as you get older, which exposes more of the yellow, dentin layer toward the inside of the teeth. For this reason, you need to take care to preserve the enamel for as long as possible.

The use of a fluoridated toothpaste or drinking water with fluoride is your best line of defense. You should also brush and floss regularly as well as making sure to get dental treatment as soon as possible if you notice signs of dry mouth.

How Else Can You Slow Down the Aging Process?

In addition to proper oral health, there are other ways that you can slow down the yellowing – and aging – process of your teeth. First, if you tend to grind your teeth, make sure you treat this problem quickly. All of that excess pressure can cause your teeth to yellow.

Similarly, you need to protect your teeth from potential trauma, like wearing a mouth guard during sports. A good diet, getting enough sleep, and managing your stress level can also help to keep your dentin and enamel healthy.

Despite what you might believe, simply caring for your teeth on your own at home won't prevent them from aging. You need regular appointments with your dentist as well as professional cleanings to ensure your pearly whites stay just that way – white! We can help to keep your teeth healthy, and we also offer whitening services to clear away any pesky, external stains. You'll be proud to show off your smile.
The first step to a healthy beautiful smile is to schedule an appointment.
